This year’s edition of the Access Bank- UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournament will begin on Wednesday and end on June 9, organisers have said in Lagos.

The two-week competition, which will holds in Kaduna, has 17 teams from across the globe vying for honours.

The highlight of the tournament is the High Goal Charity Shield, which has a prize money of $20,000, while there is also the Access Bank Cup and the UNICEF Cup for kids.

Director, Personal Banking, Access Bank, Victor Etuokwu, said the bank’s major reason for sponsoring the global event was because of its “relentless campaign against the HIV/ AIDS pandemic”, as well as appreciating the contribution of the Katsina family to the development of polo in Nigeria.

“This sponsorship provides the bank with yet another opportunity through its partnership with UNICEF and Fifth Chukker Polo Club to intensify the campaign against HIV/AIDS pandemic,” Etuokwu said.

He said the bank made a yearly donation of N5m to UNICEF for its campaign against HIV/AIDS, adding that proceeds from the sale of tickets and memorabilia from the annual tournament were remitted to the United Nations body for the care of vulnerable and orphaned children in Kaduna State.
