A dietician, Mrs Salamatu Ibrahim, has advised Nigerians to increase their intake of water melon during the hot season to enable them to withstand the harsh weather. Ibrahim told newsmen in Dutse on
Saturday that people in the Northern part of Nigeria who were experiencing the hot weather condition needed to eat more water melon. She said that water melon was a kind of fruit that is rich in water to quench thirst as well as other nutrients for the body's healthy growth.
Ibrahim said that studies had shown that water melon helped to control blood pressure, heart diseases, protect skin from the sun and promote body resistance against infections.
''This fruit is rich in electrolytes and its water content helps to quench thirst: it strengthens our body immunity.

''Water melon is very low in calories and fats and a great source of Vitamin-A known to protect against lung and oral cavity cancers," she said.
She added that water melon was delicious and naturally good for children and adult, adding that parents should endeavour to make their wards eat it daily.

She, however, cautioned against people eating the fruit under hygienic conditions to avoid infections.
''It is good to keep it away from flies and ensure proper washing before eating," she said.
She added that ''mothers must keep their kitchens and surroundings clean for a healthy family.''
