NEW Scotland boss Gordon Strachan last night vowed to make the national team as good as the FANS.

Strachan, who has been appointed until 2016, says his priority is to rebuild Scotland’s battered status.
The national team is bottom of World Cup 2014 qualifying Group A with no chance of reaching the Brazil finals.

But Strachan insists he is the man to transform the fortunes of the nation.
He said: “People say to me this is the perfect time to come in.
“I really don’t know, I just feel it’s the right time for me.
“At the moment, the fans are more famous than the team and we have to try to get up there and be as famous as them.

“We might not do it, but we just want to get better.”
And Strachan, 55, said he has a simple priority in the games to come — starting with next month’s Pittodrie friendly against Estonia.

He added: “The first objective we have is to win.
“We’d all like to play a certain style of football, but winning is the main thing.
“You have to get the best system that suits our best players and pick that system.
“It might not be beautiful football and passing but we all want to win.

“Liverpool like to pass the ball and Stoke City have their own way of playing.
“But Alex Ferguson’s way is just about winning. There’s a variation involved, but it’s about winning.
“So we have to try to get some wins, that’s for sure.”
Strachan will spend the next few days putting together his backroom staff, who will again be part-time.

He wants two assistants and said: “I’ve spoken to one person at the moment, but I’m looking to get a team of three on the touchline.
“I am hopeful of bringing in somebody who’s a bit younger, if I can — a Scot who’s trying to progress through his coaching.

“He’ll join with me and the other assistant and we’ll make it a three-man group.
“Then there’ll be Billy Stark and Mark Wotte who I’ll work closely with as well.”
