The Nigerian Army today says it was retraining its soldiers on
weapons handling to enhance their efficiency in tackling security
challenges in the country.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC)1 Division of the Nigerian Army,
Major Gen. Garba Wahab, said this while speaking to journalists during
the Range Classification Training for soldiers in Kaduna.
Wahab said the retraining would also enable the military personnel
to prevent any mishap or accidental discharge while carrying out their
duties.
`` The training would reduce the issue of accidental discharge and
accidental firing, and it is a retraining for every soldier yearly.
``This is very necessary because we need to reduce the issue of
collateral damage and in doing that whoever is commanded to fire will
have a particular target not just firing indiscriminately. ’’
According to the commandant, all soldiers are expected to undergo
physical, medical and weapon handling training annually to ascertain
their capability.
`` Whether you are in the office or deployed to the streets,
everybody is expected to come down here for this training, which might
last for two months. And nobody is exempted.’’
The GOC also expressed satisfaction with the performance of the
soldiers at the retraining camp, assuring the public of the army’s
resolve to tackle any security breach during Easter.
