Rescuers have evacuated more than 100 residents trapped in flooded houses Thursday due to lasting rainstorms in a Huangshan city community in east China’s Anhui Province.

The community, home to more than 600 residents in Huangshan city, was seriously flooded by the water from the nearby Xin’an River.

The continuous rising water level in Xin’an River was pushed up by the heavy rainfall these days, and eventually the water flowed out of the river and rushed to the low-lying Mengyuancun community.
More than 100 residents were trapped in their houses as the water level continued to go up coupled by the water gushing out of wells and pipes in the community.

A well started to gush out fiercely as local police officers were rushing to evacuate the trapped residents.
The head of the local police station says it was not as serious as it is at the moment he arrived there as they started helping the residents in moving their belongings, but a while later the well water suddenly gushed up very high forcing the flood water to go knee-deep.

The accumulated flood water was reaching people’s waist in some cases, and was more than one meter deep, said the police.

The police officers, the fire-fighters and community workers joined in the rescue operation, evacuating the trapped residents with steamboats.

The more than 100 trapped people were all evacuated after several hours of rescue, and police have cordoned the seriously flooded places for the sake of safety.
