Last week, we featured an article on the role tablets have to play in the workplace, seeing their increasing popularity in Nigeria today. There were some reactions on the extent of their usefulness in this regard. Oyebisi Agboola, a banker said, “There is a trend at the moment for a lot of professionals to use tablets at their work places. Apparently, this is because the tablets are very portable and very user friendly. However, tablets are very limited and restricted at the moment. Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are very important tools for professionals. No professional in the 21st century can do any professional work without these tools. If tablets are going to have any chance of replacing laptops like the way laptops have replaced the desktops, the technology of the tablets have to improve immensely.”

Toeing the same line, Felicity Akugbe, a medical professional said, “The (Microsoft) Word application available on tablets is very crude and clumsy as compared to what you can do with it on a laptop!” However, she added that “with time and improvement in technology, anything is possible!”
There were some sceptics like Olusegun Ashaye, a Veterinary doctor who expressed that tablets will not get functional as to replace laptops in the work environment.

While the subject of tablets replacing laptops still remains debatable and inconclusive as we really cannot tell exactly what tomorrow’s technology may make possible, Digital Savvy has gone ahead to seek how tablets can deliver essential productivity  tasks in a work environment beyond the browsing and note taking they are known for.

We found out that the Galaxy Tab 3 made by Samsung can be hooked up with an LCD/Plasma TV to display images such as pictures and PowerPoint presentations and videos like a documentary to an audience without the use of a projector.

How do you do this? According to Product Analyst at Samsung, Mr Elvis Okoro, this can be done in three simple steps.

First, get a HDMI adapter (sold separately) which you connect to your TV. LCD/LED/Plasma TVs have a HDMI connecting port which the adapter will connect to.

Next, the HDMI adapter  is linked using the HDMI cable to the Galaxy TAB 3.
Then go to the HDMI mode of your TV, and the display should be up and running.
The above can still be achieved without having to buy a HDMI adapter in a much easier manner without cables Using Allshare with any Smart  TV.

Okoro said, “Depending on the Smart TV model, pair both Galaxy Tab 3 and the Smart TV together using WIFI direct on the TV settings menu.
“Input the passcode displayed on the TV on the Galaxy Tab 3. Once done, you can play videos, pictures, and so on.”

Considering the fact that these LCD/LED/Plasma TVs are common place in organisations today, and with the right tablet, you can make use of this knowledge and explore wider applications for your tablet beyond the basic uses, thereby getting enhanced productivity and greater utility from the hard-earned money invested in their purchase.

Taking it a bit further to the home front, you can put up that video recorded at that birthday party or other occasion for all to see using the methods described above directly from the tablet.
The hassle of transferring to another device or thinking of how to record it on a DVD is completely removed.

My tablet encompasses lots of things —Sosanya
Nollywood actress, Anu Sosanya, reveals her favourite electronic gadget and how it also serves as her external hard disk.
What is your favourite gadget?
I am not a gadget freak, but I have an android tablet which always keeps me busy. It has become my favourite gadget because of its usefulness and the developed passion for it.

What specific thing do you use it for?
I loaded it up with all my favourite songs. I made dozens of playlists for all my different purposes. I usually plug it into my car radio’s aux input. I don’t need to listen to CD or car radio. I can watch any kind of film once I download them on it. Most importantly, I also use it as a diary; I use it to save my concepts, ideas and memos.

What would you change to make it better?
Nothing serious; it is the perfect little device for me. I could have loved it more if it has a radio.
