The Federal Capital Territory Administration Universal Basic Education Board says plans are underway to increase sanitary and toilet facilities in FCT schools in 2013 in line with global best practices.

Adamu Noma, the Board’s Director, disclosed in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja.
Noma said the board had undertaken various sensitisation campaigns on hand washing, personal hygiene and open defecation across schools in 2012. He said that the board’s focus for 2013 would be on the provision of toilet facilities, in line with the budgetary provisions for the year.

“Those schools that don’t have boreholes, we want to make sure that within the ambient of the budget we will capture them and then those that don’t have toilet facilities it is our intention to make sure that we provide toilet facilities to all schools that don’t have adequate toilet facilities within our budgetary provision.

“If you look at the number of schools, we will not be able to provide all these facilities at the same time. We have about 125 primary schools, 127 junior secondary schools and 173 (ECCDE) Early Child Care Development Education Centres.

We have taken it upon ourselves to make sure that every school in the FCT is provided with toilet facilities because we don’t want to undermine the availability of toilet facilities, we know that is very important, and schools that don’t have toilet facilities, we are capturing them,” he said.
