Blood donation is a great decision and reflects that donor is
thinking of saving others' lives. This is the reason when a person comes
to the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPTS) to donate
blood then its staff makes sure that he is made comfortable.
The WPTS said that they have been able to save lives of more than 3,
90,000 lives. Its officials were of the view that they are thankful to
their donors as blood donation is a voluntary decision and cannot be
forced on someone.
In certain areas, blood donation is the need on everyday basis. To
cite an example, Western Cape requires 800 units of blood on every day.
Only if the said amount is present in the place, need of local hospitals
gets fulfilled.
Marlize Mouton, who is the Corporate Public Relations Officer at
WPTS, was of the view that the Western Cape's population is on rise.
Therefore, such an amount of becomes normal for the place.
This is the reason that they ask people on regular basis that they
should be donating blood. Sometimes, incidents are quite critical and
more amount of blood is required like car crash. "Research has indicated
that although up to 75% of the population in the Western Cape may
require blood transfusions in their lifetime, less than 1.5% are blood
donors".
