Seven persons were, on Tuesday, arraigned before an Osogbo magistrate court for allegedly stealing a goat belonging to the Osun State government.

The suspects, who comprised of six men and one woman, were arraigned before Magistrate Habibat Bashiru and were alleged to have committed the offence on May 14, 2013.

Police Prosecutor, Mr Isiaka Ajadi, informed the court that the suspects, who were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, should be punished by the court for their action.

He disclosed that the suspects stole a goat belonging to the state government at the government’s livestock garden, GRA Osogbo on 14TH May, 2013 and thereby committed the offence which he said were contrary to and punishable under section 516 and 390(9) of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The suspects, namely Muhammed Moruf, Ayeni Abiodun, Agboola Fatai, Fayinka Gbenga, Olowoniyi Jeromu, Olorunfunmi Adeyemi and Babatunde Michael pleaded not guilty to the allegations leveled against them.

Counsel to the accused persons Mr. Nnnena Ngwu, urged the court to grant his clients bail in the most liberal term, claiming that the suspects should be presumed innocent until the contrary is established.

He assured that the suspects would not jump bail if granted, stressing that he would produce them whenever their attention is needed by the court.

Magistrate Basiru, consequently granted the suspects bail in the sum of #50,000 each with a surety and thereafter adjourned the case till 5th June, 2013 for hearing.
