Dakar – Hamat Bah, the leader of the Gambian opposition National
Reconciliation Party (NRP), has called on Nigerian President, Goodluck
Jonathan, to step in and help Gambia start “national dialogue”, a local
paper reported Monday.
Mr Bah’s call came on the heels of the release of 27 prisoners by
President Yahya Jammeh which he said should be the beginning of “genuine
national reconciliation programme”.
According to the opposition leader, such a programme should revolve
around a “national dialogue”across board – involving politicians, civil
society groups, professional bodies, among others.
“We want to encourage President Jonathan to continue his engagement
beyond Sierra Leone to The Gambia, in order to help kick start a
national dialogue,”Mr Bah was quoted as saying.
He said Nigeria had a crucial role when it comes to engaging people in dialogue in Africa and West Africa in particular.
Meanwhile, many political observers have also pointed out the need
for dialogue between the Gambian government and the opposition.(NAN)
