The House of Representatives yesterday mandated its
joint committees on Employment, Labour and Productivity, and Anti-
corruption, National Ethics and Values to carry out a holistic
investigation on the all edge employment racket and report to the House
within three weeks.
This followed the outcome of the adoption of a motion
sponsored by Hon. Yusuf Ayo Tajudeen, who said the situation has led to
officials in government taking undue advantage of the desperation and
helplessness of job seekers.
He said the job seekers are made to go through
herculean task before they could secure employment adding that federal
government ministries, departments and agencies (MDA’s) which are
expected to show good examples are actually perpetrating the act.
He lamented that, the unethical practice is prevalent
in para-military agencies, where applicants are requested to come along
with items such as T- shirt, canvass shoe, shorts, bed-sheets and
pillow, as require for training exercise, whereas the aforementioned
items are meant to be provided free at the government expenses.
He condemned the practice where unemployed youth are
require to pay out between N200 and N500 thousand before they can secure
employment in some agencies.
