A 32-year-old civil servant, Ismaila
Ahmed, was yesterday arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate’s Court
for allegedly killing his younger brother, Iliyasu Ahmed, with a charmed
ring.
The accused who resides at Inoziomi
quarters in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State was charged with
criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, offences contrary to Sections
97 and 224 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor, Samuel Ikutanwa, told
the court that the accused on October 27, 2012, at about 6.30 pm
allegedly beat up the deceased with a ring, causing him to slump.
”The deceased, Iliyasu, was involved
in a fight with one Buhari Abdullahi (now at large) and the accused, in
a bid to separate the fight, beat his brother with a charmed ring and
he slumped and died,” the prosecutor said.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the
charges when it was read to him while the prosecutor urged the court to
remand him in prison custody, saying that investigation into the matter
is still on-going.
But counsel to the accused, Muazu Abbas, urged the court to grant the accused bail.
He told the court that the accused
before his arraignment was on police bail. He also tendered a letter
written to the court by one Suleiman S. Obadegba, an uncle to the
deceased, of the family’s intention not to pursue the case.
The Chief Magistrate, Levi Animoku, in
his ruling granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with a
surety in like sum. He then adjourned the case to June 13, 2013.
